Dahkla & Sicily are another two spots that are high on kiters wish lists and luckily for myself and all the students and staff at WCKA they were our two destinations for quarter 4, the last quarter of the school year, lets start off with a bit more about Dakhla.
After two weeks at home my knee was feeling better and I was ready to get back on the water, I was also a little nervous about it as after just a week in Dakhla I was due to fly to France to compete in the junior world championships in France, from one side I was desperate to get back on the water and train for the competition, but from the other side I was afraid of pushing it too hard and re-injuring.
I arrived to Dakhla a few days before school started and met up with Tom and Robin who also came a few days early with their families to enjoy a few days kiting together before school started, the trip to Dahkla took a bit longer than expected and involved an unplanned overnight wait in Cassablanca airport as the flight was cancelled because of a sandstorm, well at least if there is a sandstorm there is wind!
This was my first time in Dakhla, and although I don't have other spots to compare to I would say that Dakhla Attitude is pretty much perfect, the rooms in the camp are basic but cosy, the restaurant serves three great meals a day and the kite spot is right in front of your room, a huge lagoon with more than enough space, as if the spot wasn't good enough though it has a special secret, just downwind from the camp there is the 'speed spot' it's basically a sand bank that gets exposed as the tide goes out creating a spot that is about as flat as you can get with constant wind, for freestyle it just does not get better than this, the only small problem is to schedule your kiting times with the tide, for us as a school this meant we had to switch our days around a little bit to make the most of it. If you visit Dakhla the other kite experience not to be missed is a downwinder to the white dunes, organized by the kite school everyone gathers for a great downwind ride finishing off at a massive sand dune forming a beautiful lagoon, the blue water contrasts with the dessert view perfectly, and after the session the kite school helps you pack and load and get into one of their 4x4's for an offroad drive back to the camp.
As for the competition in France this was also a great success, check out the next blog post about that.
